Stretching

Next it is time to use the jacks.  We have experimented with several ways to do this.  Some drum makers who work alone must pump one jack and a time.  We have the advantage of working together, so we can pump all the jacks at the same time.  This gives less chance for the skin to be offset to one side or another.  The sequence we usually follow is to pump about 5-6 times and then do the first walk.  Then pump 5-6 times more and do the second walk.  Then we pump about 4-5 times and listen with a bachi to the sound.  When it seems close to going up, we do our third walk.  Finally we pump maybe 2-3 times and we start analyzing when to call it.
