Rim Template

The first step is to choose the circumference of the outer template. It should be the largest circle possible, which means that it will just touch the edges of the rim at the shortest diameter. This template needs to be truly round, so be careful when scribing it from a thin cardboard or matting material.  We have several of these in 1/4″ steps to try out the possible options.  Once the largest template is found, we draw a line using a red Sharpie and then use the belt sander to take off any excess wood up to this line. The belt sanding along the sides should be gradual, blending into the body over several inches.
