Preparing the Barrel
Before the stretch begins, we do three things. First, we wax the top 2″ of the barrel again. This is for the future if the drum is reheaded, it will facilitate removal. Next, we like to put some type of message inside, both to act as a sort of time capsule, but also for the drummer to be inspired by. We print on paper that fits above the dimpling area and apply it with epoxy. The last preparation is to place a supporting strap around the center of the barrel, just in case there is any failure during the stretch. We use a long piece of felt to cusion it underneath the rachet-type strap. When it comes time for roping, we have to slide the ratchet area a bit to get it so it does not get in the way of one of the rope twists.
